A very late contender for goal of the season came from the relative European football backwater of the Dutch fifth division, as Oeverzwaluwen ace Bart van der Veer managed to score from close to the halfway line after just 3.6 seconds of their clash with Asser LTC.
Van der Veer used skill, improvisation and speed of thought to outfox the Asser goalkeeper from a full 50 yards on May 10th, sending a brilliant strike sailing into the roof of the net to leave the opposition stunned just a matter of moments into the clash.
Oeverzwaluwen finished bottom of their league this year but have a genuine moment of magic to take comfort from when staring at the standings in disbelief, thanks to a strike that paved the way for a 4-2 victory.
David Beckham and most recently Wayne Rooney have produced similar efforts to savour, but they might both have to bow down to Van der Veer when it comes to sheer audacity that early in a match.
