Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is ready to part with a significant chunk of his £100m summer transfer budget in order to secure the services of Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, who could find himself surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu next season if Los Blancos sign Liverpool forward Luis Suarez or Manchester City star Sergio Aguero.
Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo say English press claim the Gunners are willing to make a €50m offer - around £41m - for the France international, who has scored 24 goals in 51 appearances this season. The 26-year-old will be hoping to add to his tally on Saturday night in what promises to be the biggest match of his professional career: the 2013/14 Champions League final.
Benzema is likely to start against fellow finalists Atletico Madrid at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon this weekend - and if he produces a match-winning performance to land Real Madrid their 10th European Cup, the elusive trophy all Madridistas have craved for 12 years, it may convince the club’s coach Carlo Ancelotti and president Florentino Perez to stick with the ex-Lyon striker.
However, failure to perform on the night will almost certainly open up the door for Arsenal to sign Benzema this summer. There have also been plenty of reports and rumours suggesting Real Madrid want the Premier League’s top goalscorer, Suarez, while Argentina international Aguero is another attractive option for the nine-time European champions.
As well as launching a €50m bid for Benzema, it’s believed recently-crowned FA Cup winners Arsenal also want to sign the Real Madrid star’s teammate Angel di Maria, and are poised to make a €40m offer for the Argentine winger over the coming weeks.
