Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has identified Mats Hummels as his ‘favourite centre-back’ as he begins to plan for his first transfer window at the Old Trafford helm. Hummels, who plays for Borussia Dortmund, has been linked with the club for some time and a move could perhaps be in the offing.
Van Gaal is likely to have to reinforce in central defence over the coming months given that Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand have both left the club, leaving Jonny Evans the most experienced player in these positions.
Hummels could well be the player Van Gaal identifies to succeed the illustrious departed duo, and Dutch football expert Marcel van der Kraan claims the Germany international has a huge admirer in the new Manchester United boss.
"Van Gaal has a favourite centre-back,” he said, as reported by the Daily Star.
"And he's been really impressed by Mats Hummels."
Should Manchester United make an approach for Hummels, then they would have to pay £29.5 million in order to bring the player to Old Trafford, with this the size of the release clause written into his contract.
The 25-year-old has established himself as one of the finest players in his position across European football over the past few seasons, and has made 221 appearances for Borussia Dortmund.
