Manchester United run the risk of experiencing another summer of transfer disappointment, as German sources claim there is absolutely no way they will convince the Bundesliga quartet of Mario Mandzukic, Toni Kroos, Holger Badstuber and Arjen Robben to move to Old Trafford.
The four Bayern Munich stars are all said to rank highly on Louis van Gaal’s wish-list as he aims to completely revamp the United squad, but German newspaper Bild has claimed that the Dutchman faces ultimate rejection. It’s hardly good news for fans of the Red Devils who were promised the complete opposite of last season, when David Moyes was unable to add any world-class talents to the team Sir Alex Ferguson left behind when he retired.
Bild’s lead story this afternoon claims that United won’t be landing any of Bayern’s top players, regardless of the fact that Van Gaal has a mooted £200million to play with. Robben is said to not only be considered indispensable to Pep Guardiola’s side, but he’s also reportedly perfectly settled in Munich and would not be open to the idea of moving away. The paper also states that Badstuber is keen to repay Bayern for showing him faith throughout a lengthy injury this year and that Kroos - a long-term target of United - will not be going anywhere until at least 2015. Rounding off the disappointment, it’s thought that Mandzukic is close to joining Chelsea, and so a move to Manchester is unlikely.
With the transfer window not yet open there’s plenty that could change in the coming months, but for now at least it would seem Van Gaal has his work cut out for him if he is to steer his new club away from the difficulties his predecessor fell foul of.
