Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and owner Roman Abramovich have now, it seems, settled on their five main summer transfer targets - and hope to complete deals for the quintet ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.
The five players are: Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa, Bayern Munich frontman Mario Mandzukic, FC Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala, plus Sevilla duo Alberto Moreno and Ivan Rakitic, according to the Daily Star.
It’s believed Chelsea have already stuck a £32m deal with Atletico for the transfer of Brazil-born Spain international Diego Costa. The transfer is poised to be completed after the Champions League final, which Costa is expected to miss with a hamstring injury, this Saturday.
A deal to take Mandzukic to Stamford Bridge also looks likely after the Croatia international was left out of the Bayern Munich squad for last weekend’s German Cup final against Borussia Dortmund by Pep Guardiola, who has the Poland international Robert Lewandowski on his way to the Allianz Arena this summer.
Mangala, one of Europe’s most highly-rated central defenders, recently claimed he would prefer a move to Chelsea over Manchester City, who are keen to sign the expensive France international.
Moreno has been the best left-back in La Liga this season, but Chelsea will need to fend off stiff competition from Real Madrid to secure the Spain international’s services this summer, while Croatia midfielder Rakitic is also on Madrid’s radar after a stunning season in Spain with the Andalusian outfit.
Meanwhile, it’s also reported that Chelsea have made it clear that none of their star players will be leaving Stamford Bridge over the forthcoming months.
