Louis van Gaal is prepared to axe all but four of Manchester United's stars ahead of a massive summer overhaul at Old Trafford, reports Daily Star.
The Dutch national coach was confirmed as the new boss at Old Trafford on Monday afternoon and he is now preparing for a huge cull of players he doesn't believe are good enough.
According to the national paper, the list of players that Van Gaal is not impressed by is rather long. In fact, it contains everyone except Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata, David De Gea and Robin van Persie.
The rest of the Manchester United squad, which includes the likes of Danny Welbeck, Michael Carrick, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones will have to impress Van Gaal or risk being part of the contingent likely to be pushed out the Old Trafford exit door.
Even under David Moyes, a big cull of faltering stars was expected but Van Gaal is seemingly prepared to rebuild the Manchester United team from almost scratch.
The departure of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic means a new-look defence was always likely at Old Trafford but Van Gaal also wants to overhaul the midfield with the likes of Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher not convincing the ruthless Dutchman.
It represents somewhat of a demise for Carrick, who just two seasons ago was nominated for PFA Player of the Year. Not only was he left out of England's World Cup squad but he could also find himself on the transfer list if he doesn't impress Van Gaal in pre-season.
