This week the club hosts the European Tour’s flagship event; the BMW PGA Championship.
Play starts on Thursday and there’s a packed field ready to contend for the title that Matteo Manassero won here last year.
And that field contains three of the world’s top 10 Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy.
Now as well as the Northern Irishman there’s a strong British contingent here this week including Justin Rose and the US Open champion’s preparations included a trip to Hyde Park where he took on Manassero and Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley in a nearest the pin challenge.
“It’s a nice opportunity today to be down here around the serpentine and just driving around to getting here and going past some iconic landmarks. You’ve got Harrods building, the natural history museum and then I saw the Shard and the London Eye so it makes you feel like your back in town. Obviously Wentworth is reletively close to town so even though I’m staying the other that side it’s nice to feel like I’ve been in the city for a day.”
“In terms of form for the Ryder Cup, it really starts this week. This is the real start of the summer season as golfers, the start of the BMW PGA Championships at Wentworth is always the season opener. We’ve got the Open Championship coming up, you’ve got the Scottish Open as well, we’ve got the Welsh Open, Irish Open obviously too. It’s a real season of big tournaments and I’ll be looking very closely at those tournaments and the performances in those tournaments for the players.”
“I really like coming back to London all the time we don’t come here very often unfortunately but when we come here it brings back special memories. When I think about London I always think about Wentworth to tell you the truth just because of last year but London is a great city.”
