Eden Hazard has proved himself as a quality addition to the Chelsea team since his arrival in 2012 but his defensive qualities are lacking and after Jose Mourinho’s recent comments about the attacker it's got people thinking about his future at Chelsea.
Hazard has contributed 23 goals in 69 games for the Blues and plenty of assists for the rest of the squad showing his quality in an attacking sense however his defensive game is far less impressive.
After the 3-1 loss to Atletico Madrid, Hazard was quoted as saying "Chelsea aren't set up to play football'', this was quickly shot down by Mourinho who said Hazard was at fault for Atletico’s first goal with his lack of tracking back and “sacrificing himself” for the team.
It’s not the first time Hazard’s defending has come into question and Jose himself knows Hazard isn’t the most reliable defensively having played him just behind the striker on a few occasions having either André Schürrle or Willian cover the left back.
In those games Hazard never got to show his usual quality, losing the chance to run at full backs and cut in playing cutting passes or shooting, he looked fairly subdued. This then raises the question, is Hazard the right fit for Chelsea? They have quality replacements in Schürrle, Oscar, Willian and the plethora of players coming back from loan such as Moses, Marin and many others who can provide quality in both an attacking and defending situations, and is it a real possibility to challenge for the title when the team has a clear weakness defensively?
Chelsea nor any other team can afford to play full attacking open football without considering the defensive side of the game, proof if it was needed has been Liverpool’s season, they scored plenty of goals but defensively weren't strong enough and thats what cost them the title.
If Jose wants to completely change playing style into a more attacking team then Hazard would be a player to keep but if PSG or any other club were to offer £40million Jose would have to seriously consider taking the money as he did with Juan Mata and investing it in a much needed strike force.
In no way am I saying Hazard isn’t good enough for Chelsea but under Mourinho they are a much more tactical outfit and he doesn't really fit with that style of play, if Mourinho manages to mould him to play a number 10 role behind a Lukaku or a Costa then next season could be a lot more successful and bring the titles that are synonymous with Chelsea and Mourinho.
