Italian giants Fiorentina are considering a shock double swoop for Arsenal pair Thomas Vermaelen and Mikel Arteta, according to reports in Italy.
TalkSPORT relay reports which originated in Florentine newspaper La Nazione and speculate that Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Montella has Vermaelen and Arteta firmly on his radar. Both men are facing precarious futures in north London, with club captain Vermaelen having lost his position to the partnership of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny and Arteta already having voiced his discomfort with not being offered more than a one-year deal.
As such it’s thought that Fiorentina are ready to take advantage of the situation with Montella looking to strengthen his squad ahead of a European campaign next season. It’s thought that the Serie A side, who finished fourth this term, will lure the pair with the promise of lengthy deals and guaranteed game-time.
Whether or not either man will consent to leaving the Premier League remains to be seen, but the prospect will definitely leave Arsene Wenger with food for thought. With Bacary Sagna already being heavily tipped to join Manchester City Arsenal’s squad is running dangerously thin when it comes to experienced heads. Will Wenger allow two more to depart?
