I’m down here at the Oval getting ready for the Royal London one day international series against Sri Lanka which starts tomorrow and I can’t wait for it to get under way.
I came down from Leeds last night but not in time to get to the Oval so I had to watch the T20 on TV and it was a shame we couldn’t quite get the victory.
We have to move on though and I had a net this morning to get myself prepared for the series against Sri Lanka. It went really well and it’s always good to get involved and get some practice against some quality bowlers so hopefully I can take that into the series.
Sri Lanka are obviously a good side and they are the T20 champions as well as a very good 50-over side so it’s going to be tough. In our conditions over here I’m sure we will get a win if we play like we can do.
I’d love to be in the side and hopefully I am but there are so many quality players around this squad it is never easy. If I do get a chance to play then hopefully I can get a decent score and put the team into a good position to win the game.
I’ve only been around the England team for about six months now and I’ve been a little bit in and out so it would be nice to cement a place but there are so many good county cricketers out there it is extremely tough to do that. I have to keep working hard and if I do get a chance I have to take it with both hands.
I’ve had to leave the Yorkshire boys and hopefully they can get their twenty20 season up and running on Friday. We played against Northants last week and we were pretty disappointed to lose because we got ourselves into a winning position and we ended up losing in the last over. We did show signs of playing good cricket and we’ve had a couple of warm up games this week so hopefully we can improve.
The games were against teams which were full of the best club payers from around Yorkshire so the side was decent and it has been good practice for the lads. It was good to have some practice before heading into competition so hopefully the boys can improve and get a win at Birmingham on Friday.
This is the time of year where counties start to lose their England players and I have to say the standard in county cricket has been raised this year because there has been so many international players coming back into the team and they have made the competition stronger.
All the teams have been strong, especially in division one and everybody can beat every team and there’s been some high quality cricket being played which means players are pushing for England places.
