There’s no doubt that Chelsea’s season has been hampered by the lack of a free scoring striker, or strikers.
As a rule the Blues play controlling football, with an occasional defending masterclass, and possess a team full of quality players with the ability to break and create chances in the blink of an eye. Unfortunately this season, not enough of those chances have been taken.
There’s been much made of the current strikers only producing four more goals than one man in Romelu Lukaku. Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o have at times been good individually, as Eto’o proved with a hat-trick against Manchester United, Demba Ba with goals against Liverpool and PSG and Torres versus Atletico Madrid, but for three strikers at a top club its just not enough.
Chelsea have been heavily linked with Diego Costa, who himself scored 27 goals for Atletico Madrid, and have also been named in connection with other players such as Edinson Cavani, who scored 25 goals. Both players also helped their respective clubs win their leagues, which would be valuable experience for anyone going into a team that’s expected to challenge for the title every year.
Whoever Chelsea bring in it will be the start of a new era. Eto’o will not have his contract renewed and it’s believed that Mourinho would let Ba leave if the right offer comes in. The biggest question Chelsea fans have for next season is whats happening with the striker situation, as there’s worries that Lukaku could be sold or loaned out again. If big money is spent it might not be the right move, having seen plenty of players struggle after moving to the Premier League - Tottenham's Roberto Soldado being the most relevant example.
Then of course there's the amount of players Chelsea currently have coming back from loan spells, so there’s no doubt there’s going to be a new look squad next season, with some new names coming in and possibly a big money move for one or two strikers made to spearhead Mourinho's ambitions.
