Liverpool have suffered a major setback in their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can with Bayern Munich believed to have a buy-back agreement in place for the 20-year-old.
Can only left Bayern last year in a €5m deal and has enjoyed an impressive season at the BayArena, notching up 25 starts in the Bundesliga as well as five in the Champions League.
Bild initially reported that Liverpool had agreed a €12m (£10m) fee for the promising defensive midfielder but Eurosport Germany are now claiming that Bayern will have first option on bringing Can back to Bavaria which will prove a significant stumbling block for Brendan Rodgers:
“He is a big talent and still only 20 years old. He has enjoyed a breakthrough season with Leverkusen. He is quick and technically very good,” Said a source from Eurosport’s Munich office.
“He came from Bayern Munich to Leverkusen last summer for €5 million but Bayern may re-sign him for a fixed price.”
A Bayern representative added: “Karl-Heinz Rummenigge [Bayern CEO] has already said he wants him back in a few years and said the only reason they sanctioned the move to Leverkusen was so he could get some match practice."
“For that reason we don’t believe he’ll go to Liverpool. Leverkusen need the consent of Bayern and Bayern doesn’t want to give it.”
Indeed when Can left the Allianz Arena last August, Rummenigge was clear in his vision that Can’s departure was effectively a loan deal to expose the youngster to first team football as Bayern have done previously:
"Emre Can is one of the biggest talents in German football. We wanted to allow him this step so he gets more match practice - just as we have previously done it with Toni Kroos at Leverkusen, Philipp Lahm at Stuttgart or David Alaba at Hoffenheim," he said in a club statement issued at the time.
Bayern may be forced into activating the clause sooner than they had intended but while a move for the highly sought after Can looks set to fall through, Liverpool may still land a Bayern Munich player this summer.
Out of favour Xherdan Shaqiri is another name believed to be on Brendan Rodgers’ shopping list with Bayern believed to be open to offers for the 22-year-old Swiss winger who from FC Basel in 2012 and hasn’t reached the heady heights that were expected of him, failing to regularly force his way into the first team fold.
