American soccer star, Landon Donovan has been left out of the final 23-man USA roster for the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

ESPN's SportsCenter tweeted the news ahead of the official release of the roster: "#USMNT has released its 23-man final roster for Brazil. US Soccer legend Landon Donovan is NOT on the team"

Donovan has represented the team at every World Cup since 2002 and has amassed over 150 appearances and 56 goals.

However the star had mentioned last week that his inclusion at his fourth World Cup was not a certainty during the team's training camp at Stanford.

Sunderland's Jozy Altidore and San Jose Earthquake's Chris Wondolowski are included as is Bayern Munich starlet Julian Green.

Donovan's club side, LA Galaxy tweeted their confusion at the snub saying: "Landon Donovan. Why not?" The tweet included a chart showing the star's goalscoring record at international level.

It appears that head coach Jurgen Klinsmann is plumping for youth in what will be a very challenging group for the USA.

However should the United States fail to qualify for the knockout stages, questions will certainly be asked about this controversial decision.

The USA will face Germany, Ghana and Portugal in group G at the tournament.
