Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has identified Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas as his priority transfer target, according to The Daily Star.

The Red Devils, under David Moyes, tried to bring the Spanish international to the club last year, however the move failed to materialise. This time around, though, it appears that Fabregas is open to working with Van Gaal at Old Trafford.

And if reports are to be believed, Manchester United are prepared to pay around £40 million for the player's services and offer him as much as £250,000-a-week.

Manchester United are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements after the likes of Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Marouane Fellaini and Co. struggled for form and consistency last season.

Fabregas could represent the ideal player to fit into Manchester United's midfield for the 2014/15 campaign, as the Red Devils go in search of success under the new regime.

With Arsenal also reportedly interested in the player's services, it remains to be seen as to whether Manchester United can secure his signature this summer.

The player's immediate attention, however, will turn to this summer's World Cup, as Spain target more success.
