Yasser Al-Shahrani produces worst miss of all time

Published 2 Comments

Saudi Arabia were thrashed 4-0 by Moldova in an international friendly on Saturday, but the match will be remembered for arguably the worst miss of all time: produced by striker Yasser Al-Shahrani.

The Saudi Arabia international looked certain to score after the Moldova goalkeeper lost a 50/50 challenge 30 yards from his line, but somehow proceeded to sky the ball over the crossbar with the entire goal gaping.

What made the miss all the more bizarre was the fact he took an excellent first touch before striking the ball towards goal. Sure, one of the Moldovan defenders was directly behind him when he took the shot, but he was under very little pressure.

We can only assume the ball took an unfortunate bobble at the moment he struck the ball towards goal. There’s no other logical explanation for such an embarrassing miss.

It was a miss which cost Saudi Arabia, too. Moldova were only 1-0 up at the time Al-Shahrani was presented with the simplest chance to score, but they ended up scoring three more goals before full-time to heap misery on Saudi and, in particular, their humiliated striker.
