The Gunners’ manager, who is expected to sign a new three-year deal with the north London outfit in the coming weeks, was commentating on the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid when he let slip that Benzema could be headed to the Emirates Stadium.
Wenger said Benzema "Could play his last game for Real Madrid today,” according to reports. While the veteran French coach added he was "Sure [Benzema] will play in the Premier League one day."
Benzema is reportedly high on Wenger’s summer wish list, although much could depend on whether Real Madrid are successful in signing Liverpool striker Luis Suarez this summer. The Uruguay international, who himself was linked with a move to the Gunners last year, is the man Real Madrid are keen to make as their next Galactico.
Wenger reportedly enjoys good relations with the Real Madrid hierarchy, which proved key to Arsenal successfully securing the services of Germany international Mesut Ozil for a club-record fee last summer.
The Gunners are keen to sign another striker before the start of the 2014/15 campaign to ease the pressure on Benzema’s France teammate Olivier Giroud, who grew increasingly weary as the 2013/14 campaign entered its final months.
Benzema is Wenger’s number one priority, but it’s unclear at this stage whether he would be open to the idea of joining the Gunners. However the 26-year-old, who has scored 24 goals in 52 appearances for the newly-crowned European champions, would be likely to seek a move away from Madrid if Suarez arrives.
