Across both tenures, Jose Mourinho has opened his chequebook to bring many players to Chelsea. With many being successful, and many being not so successful. Here, I look at the best players that Jose Mourinho has brought to Stamford Bridge.
5. Ricardo Carvalho
After leaving FC Porto to take the hot seat at Chelsea, Jose Mourinho brought a number of players that helped win the Champions League along with him. One of these players was Portuguese centre-back Ricardo Carvalho. Carvalho was signed for around £20million by the London club. He made a formidable partnership with John Terry, which was hailed as a focal point behind Chelsea's two Premier League titles in a row. He currently plays for AS Monaco.
4. Michael Ballack
After leaving German side Bayern Munich on a free, Michael Ballack was one of the most courted players in the world at the time, with Manchester United, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and AC Milan all interested in the player. Ballack decided to join Chelsea. Despite an injury-plagued time at Chelsea, Michael Ballack is still held in high regard by the Chelsea faithful, captaining Chelsea on many occasions. After leaving Chelsea on a free, Ballack returned to Bayer Leverkusen, and since has retired.
3. Michael Essien
At the time, Michael Essien was Chelsea's most expensive transfer. Essien joined in 2005 from Lyon for a fee of around £24.4million. The transfer saga went on for most of the summer, but Mourinho eventually got his man. He quickly became a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge due to his thunderous long range shots, most notably against Arsenal and Barcelona. The Ghanaian spent many years at Chelsea. He left briefly, on loan to Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid. In January 2014, Michael Essien joined Italian outfit AC Milan on a one-and-a-half year deal.
2. Ashley Cole
Since joining from London rivals Arsenal in 2006, Ashley Cole has cemented himself into the hearts of Chelsea fans everywhere as not just the best left back they've ever had, one of the all-time Chelsea greats too. He joined for a fee of £5million plus William Gallas, this was a move that was very controversial. Across his Chelsea career, Cole won many trophies; most notably, the Champions League and the Premier League. With Cole out of contract in the summer, he looks set to move on. What next for Cole? Who knows!
1. Didier Drogba
Who else could it have been? Undoubtedly the best player that Jose Mourinho has brought to Chelsea. Joining from Marseille in 2004, for a fee of £24million, Drogba will go down as a Chelsea legend.
Enjoying over eight glorious seasons at Chelsea, Drogba will be fondly remembered for the 2012 Champions League final. With Chelsea 1-0 down and seemingly out of the tie, Drogba scored the equaliser for Chelsea. The match went to penalties. With one penalty left, and Chelsea needing to score to win the game and the Champions League, there was only one man you would want in that situation; Didier Drogba. He stepped up and scored the winning penalty, with what was his last touch of a football as a Chelsea player.
After leaving Chelsea after his heroics in 2012, Drogba currently plays for Galatasaray, of Turkey. However he is out of contract and is said to be considering his options.
So there we have it. These players are the best players that Jose Mourinho has brought to Chelsea. What do you think? Have I missed a player out? Or do you disagree with the top 5? Let me know in the comments section.
