Juan Mata’s Manchester United career could already be over, as new boss Louis van Gaal is considering selling him in order to pave the way for Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger to move to Old Trafford, according to the Metro.
The Dutchman is keen to sign Schweinsteiger as the pair know each other well from Van Gaal’s time as Bayern manager, meaning Mata could be left out in the cold, despite some decent performances from the Spaniard since joining in January. Mata was the biggest signing David Moyes made during his time as United boss, costing the club £38million, but now the Scot's successor is ready to listen to offers of significantly less as he attempts to shape his own United side in his own image and style.
The 62-year-old has turned his attentions to Schweinsteiger after his team-mates Arjen Robben and Toni Kroos both confirmed they would be staying at the Allianz this summer.
Barcelona have appeared to be the frontrunners in the hunt to sign Mata. New boss Luis Enrique needs reinforcements as he looks to build on the squad he has, after Barcelona narrowly missed on the La Liga title to Atletico Madrid. Club legend Xavi could be on his way out of the club, while Cesc Fabregas has been linked with a move back to Arsenal.
Barcelona tried to sign Mata three years ago, but the Spaniard chose to sign for Chelsea from Valencia instead.
