USA soccer star Clint Dempsey missed his nation's World Cup warm-up game Tuesday night against Azerbaijan because of groin soreness, according to reports.
The move is likely to have many US fans fretting at the prospect of Dempsey being ruled out of the tournament, but it's understood that the move was only a precaution.
Dempsey is the captain of the team and leading goal threat, but any fears he might miss the start of the World Cup were eased when US soccer spokesman Neil Buethe explained the injury wasn't serious.
Chris Wondolowski started in the place of Dempsey and goalkeeper Tim Howard took over the captain's arm band.
Despite the comfortable 2-0 win over Azerbaijan, the Americans would have definitely preferred to not have Dempsey missing.
He will get a chance to get some much needed match practice soon enough though, with the team set to face Turkey on Sunday in New Jersey. Their three-game warm-up stretch will finish with a test against Nigeria in Jacksonville June 7.
