With big egos and superstitions common in NFL locker rooms there is often competition between players over who gets which jersey number ahead of the new season.
Whilst most discussions usually end up with one player playing huge amounts of money to another for the privilege to run out bearing a particular number, see Michael Vick, new Tennessee Titans back-up quarterback Charlie Whitehurst backed his own strength to secure the no.6 jersey.
According to an Instagram post from the QB's official account, Whitehurst challenged Titans punter, Brett Kern, to an arm wrestle in a bid to claim the jersey he had worn throughout his pro and college career.
Unfortunately for the journeyman signal-caller the special teams man proved too much to handle, beating Whitehurst and thus forcing the quarterback to take the number 12 jersey:
"Arm-wrestled the punter for #6 and lost #itwasagoodrun6 #13years," read the Instagram post.
Now Kern isn't exactly what you would call a formidable opponent so the defeat will be a bitter pill for Whitehurst to swallow.
And he will have to find a new Instagram handle too, with cwhitey6 no longer holding the same importance.
