With the Bundesliga now at an end for another season, givemesport.com looks back on the year that was to bring you the top ten defenders from Germany’s top flight including some familiar faces and some surprise inclusions.

Rankings are based on the squawka.com player rankings and players must have made a minimum of 20 appearances to qualify for consideration.

5. Joel Matip – FC Schalke

Age: 30 Apps: 31 Goals: 3

Schalke defender Matip is the busiest of our defenders with an average 9.23 defensive actions (Interceptions, blocked shots, clearances) per game during the 2013/14 season. The German born Cameroon international won 58% of all defensive duels over the course of the season including coming out on top in 68% of his aerial battles.

4. Philipp Lahm – Bayern Munich

Age: 28 Apps: 28 Goals: 1

Kicking off Bayern’s rear-guard domination is captain, and brilliantly nicknamed magic dwarf, Phillipe Lahm. In truth Lahm spent much of the season playing in a holding midfield role under new coach Pep Guardiola and the 28-year-old duly boasts some impressive passing statistics with a whopping 2024 successful passes and a passing accuracy of 92% for the season.

3. Dante – Bayern Munich

Age: 30 Apps: 29 Goals: 2

Dante is the next Bayern man in line and the Brazilain international managed to give away the most fouls of all of our defenders with 44 at an average of 1.5 per game despite only being involved in 5.9 defensive duels per game as part of an often on looking Bayern defence. Like Lahm, Dante boasts impressive passing stats under Guardiola’s keep ball philosophy with 91% of the 30-year-olds passes reaching the intended target.

2. David Alaba – Bayern Munich

Age: 21 Apps: 28 Goals: 2

Alaba has well and truly cemented his place in the Bayern Munich ranks with some impressive displays from left-back. The 21-year-old Austrian has contributed six assists and two goals for Pep Guardiola’s side and, in keeping with his fellow Bayern teammates, completed an average of 58.5 passes per game with an accuracy of 89%.

1. Ricardo Rodriguez – VFL Wolfsburg

Age: 22 Apps: 34 Goals: 5

Swiss defender Rodriguez has enjoyed an excellent season for Wolfsburg contributing five goals, the most of any defender in the Bundesliga last term. The buccaneering left-back has also supplied a staggering 69 key passes, more than double that of nearest competitor in the list and positional rival at Bayern Munich David Alaba, leading to nine assists for his team and helping claim the top spot as the Bundesliga’s best defender.
