Manchester United are ready to activate the £48million release clause in Koke's contract this summer in order to sign him from Atletico Madrid, according to the Metro.

United are thought to have identified the playmaker as one of their key transfer targets this summer, but Atletico have refused to discuss selling him. With players such as Diego Costa, Tiago and Filipe Luis also all possible leaving this summer, there is no rush for the Spanish club to sell.

However, new United boss Louis van Gaal is apparently ready to force them to do business. Koke has had a successful season at Atletico, and may not even want to leave the club after winning the La Liga title and reaching the Champions League final.

He has a release clause in his contract of £48million and reports in Spain are claiming that United will offer that to Madrid in the coming days, forcing them into negotiations. It's also claimed that United have offered the player a deal worth a staggering £3million-per-season move, but the stumbling block for the deal to go ahead is Atletico currently refusing to sell.

United are desperately looking out for a breath of fresh air in midfield, and with Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos ruling out a move to Old Trafford last week, it is thought that the Old Trafford outfit have now made Koke their no. 1 transfer target.
