The highly anticipated second special event for NXT was finally upon us as the stars of NXT proved that the future is bright in the WWE.
NXT: Takeover was live on the WWE Network and taking place at Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida and the night certainly surpassed expectations; and I fully believe that unless the WWE pull a major surprise out of the bag this Sunday for Payback; NXT: Takeover will end up being a much better event.
The pre-show itself was fantastic, great insight and opinions from Paul Heyman, Christian and Cesaro before the commentators Tom Phillips, William Regal and Byron Saxton welcomed the fans after a great opening package; with the subject surrounding evolving.
Match One: Adam Rose vs. Camacho
Better to get this match out of the way so we can focus on the brilliant matches taking place later on in the show. It wasn’t the best of matches but it allowed Adam Rose to actually get a match under his belt, a positive included that the crowd were into this match a lot and reacted to everything. Rose hit the Party Foul for the expected victory.
Result: Adam Rose defeats Camacho
Match Two: NXT Tag Team Championship – The Ascension © vs. El Local and Kalisto
The first brilliant match of the night and again brilliant reactions from the crowd, they were really behind El Local and especially Kalisto and the ‘lucha’ chants. But once more it was a match which allowed NXT to showcase the level of talent they boast, The Ascension finishing off the match with a great Fall of Man for the victory, and are showing what type of team the main roster is missing, great showcase form Konnor and Viktor.
Result: The Ascension defeat El Local and Kalisto – Still NXT Tag Team Champions
Match Three: #1 Contender Match for the NXT Championship – Tyler Breeze vs. Sami Zayn
By the end of the match it was definitely the match of the night but that’s exactly what the fans expected when they heard Sami Zayn would be competing. In the same match Tyler Breeze debuted new theme music and performed his best since his NXT debut. We saw the technical and high flying side of Sami Zayn we always love and also saw a more ruthless side of Tyler Breeze as well has he kept Zayn at bay numerous times.
In a surprising turn of events Sami Zayn actually fell short of the victory; the majority of fans strongly believed this would be the match in which Zayn walks out the victor and would challenge for the NXT Championship but instead Tyler Breeze nailed the Beauty Shot to pin Sami Zayn. Although the finish seemed like it may have been botched, the remainder of the match makes you forget about the minor errors; what a match and what a victory for Tyler Breeze.
Result: Tyler Breeze defeats Sami Zayn – New #1 contender for the NXT Championship
We’re then treated to The Ravishing Russian as Lana makes her return to NXT and introduces the super-athlete Rusev to the crowd, who enters with a huge Russian flag. She gets into the ring and says just like Russia has expanded over Europe to become the next big superpower, Rusev has expanded over to Monday Night Raw and Friday Night SmackDown.
Now he has come back to NXT to receive admiration from the peasants he stepped on to get to the top.
We see Vladimir Putin’s face on the screen as the NXT crowd boo’s but then we’re treated to Mojo Rawley, who makes his way out waving a United States flag and it looked we’re going to be having an unannounced match. Rawley says he has heard a lot of hype about Russia, but in the USA we stay hyped and it’s time somebody came to the ring and shove the flag up Rusev’s Putin.
Match Four: Mojo Rawley vs. Rusev
As expected Rusev wasn’t going to lose to an NXT talent – as good as he is – days before he has a big match against Big E. at Payback. Rusev destroys Mojo Rawley for the few minutes it takes to defeat him, Lana gives him the signal to crush and Rusev kindly obliges and locks in The Accolade as Rawley submits. As Rawley crawls up the ramp Rusev then goes after him and locks the hold in once more; making him look very strong before his match with Big E. this Sunday.
Result: Rusev defeats Mojo Rawley
Before the NXT Women’s Championship match WWE Diva’s Champion Paige is out and tells us how amazing it is to be back on NXT. She thanks the crowd and is proud of being the first ever WWE Women’s Champion, and offers words of advice for whomever is going to be the next champion.
Match Five: Vacant NXT Women’s Championship – Charlotte vs. Natalya
Bret Hart and Ric Flair were in the corners of their niece and daughter respectively and that itself was a great scene to watch. However; all that was forgotten as for the next 24 hours fans are still talking about how incredible this match was; certainly the greatest diva’s match in recent years; you can watch the closing stages of the match in the video above.
Back and forth action and Natalya came ever-so-close to capturing the gold however Charlotte picked up the victory and became the NXT Women’s Champion. They all hugged and congratulated each other at the end and I can safely say that was the match of the night. The main roster divas need to take a look at the NXT diva’s for a tip or two.
Result: Charlotte defeats Natalya – New NXT Women’s Champion
Main Event: NXT Championship – Adrian Neville © vs. Tyson Kidd
With such similar styles this match was guaranteed to be one of the best and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Technicality, high-flying, crowd reactions; it was all perfect and certainly main event standard. It just makes you wonder what Tyson Kidd needs to do in order to get a push on the main roster, looking at his work last night you’d think he should have had at least multiple Intercontinental or United States Championship runs by now. But hopefully his new gimmick will work well for him.
There were a number of close-calls which kept the fans on the edge of their seats and Neville just about managed to retain the gold, Neville jumped off the top rope for the Red Arrow for the victory.
Result: Adrian Neville defeats Tyson Kidd – Still NXT Champion
After the match Adrian Neville goes to shake Tyson’s hand, however he refused and walked out to boo’s with the show ending as Neville held up his gold.
A brilliant show and it will definitely give Payback a run for his money, one thing is for certain; the future of the WWE does look very bright.
