Now the season in Europe is done and club football takes a summer break to concentrate on preparations for next season, excitement really starts to build ahead of the World Cup in Brazil.
With only a couple of weeks remaining until the host nation kick us off against Croatia in Sao Paulo, it's no surprise that much of the talk in the papers is regarding performances in warm-up matches for the various competing nations. Lots of speculation about what a certain player's showing in the friendlies means for the tournament and whether managers still have a lot to work out when it comes to their first starting line-ups.
However, Arsene Wenger made most of the Arsenal fan base happy by confirming he had signed a new contract with the club, just a few weeks before his current deal expired. It is a three-year contract that will see him, should he see it out, be in charge of the club for 21 years and he accompanied that signing with some encouraging words regarding summer signings.
As you can imagine, it meant a raft of reports around what Wenger was going to do with this new open optimism about transfers and Arsenal's increasing spending power as new commercial deals come into play. There's talk of various targets and a 'war chest' to go about adding to the squad at Emirates Stadium.
Liverpool have been busy in the last couple of days too, with various reports about possible moves for a number of different targets. Brendan Rodgers is another who will be looking to make significant additions to his squad, as the Anfield club's successful Premier League campaign has upped the expectations for next term and the number of games they will be playing with Champions League qualification.
