Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will make a last-ditch attempt to sign Newcastle target Remy Cabella in the next couple of days as he looks to add more depth to his midfield options during the summer transfer window.
Cabella appeared to be closing in on a move to St James’ Park in the summer, however the Metro believe Chelsea have now stepped in to complicate the proposed deal.
Manchester United have previously held an interest in Cabella, however they have not turned their attention to other midfield targets following the arrival of Louis van Gaal.
Cabella is keen on moving to a club that would provide him with regular first-team football, which would not be the case at Chelsea, but he may find it hard to turn down the chance of linking up with Mourinho at Stamford Bridge.
The Portuguese tactician has entered the race to sign Cabella due to the midfielder’s versatility and because of the uncertainty surrounding Frank Lampard’s future at the west London outfit.
Both Newcastle and Chelsea are said to be prepared to meet Montpellier’s £7million asking price, however the Blues could land Cabella by offering the Frenchman £90,000-a-week.
