The website loads, a huge white ‘0’ appears and the words above read “How many Premier League medals has Steven Gerrard won?”
A picture of Stevie hanging his head offsets the page. As if that wasn’t enough, the ‘Click To Recalculate’ button sits below the massive integer like a smug grin from that sarcastic mate. It is topped off with the usual Facebook and Twitter logos but the unusual invitation to click the icons if you have won the same number of league medals as the man himself. Only in Blighty? This is a special time consuming type of schadenfreude.
The one club man (after Ryan Giggs), a bastion of loyalty and dedication reduced to a single space in his trophy cabinet or a slip-up. He could have easily moved to Chelsea and greatly increased his chances of winning the league, but he didn’t.
After making his international debut in 2000 he has been a consistent performer for The Three
Lions and is only the sixth player to win 100 caps for England. More than that though, he is of only a handful in his generation who has showed some heart when pulling on that white shirt.
He displays the desire and gumption that any football fan would wish to see of all their team’s players. In this age of quick opinions with no background knowledge you are damned if you do and ruined if you don't.
If he features in all of the friendly games leading up to the World Cup and all of the group games he will equal David Beckham’s record. So all England need to do is get out of
the group stage and Gerrard will reach 116 caps for his country.
Lets all doth our caps to the great Scouser and not join the 613 sad acts in liking the “I've won as many Premier League titles as Steven Gerrard” Facebook page. You can bet he will run his heart out for England, and that's all you can really ask for.
