Former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson has weighed in on the current transfer saga involving Cesc Fabregas, claiming that the Barcelona midfielder would probably be better off joining rivals Manchester United or Liverpool than returning to the Emirates Stadium.
Fabregas - who was named by Vicente del Bosque yesterday in Spain's final 23-man squad for the World Cup in Brazil - has found himself the subject of increasingly intense speculation over recent days, with most of the Premier League's top-hitters linked with the £30 million-rated star.
In quotes that were reported by The Daily Star, Robson - who represented the Gunners for five years between 1981-86 - appeared to express serious doubt over the possibility of Arsenal returning for Fabregas, controversially sharing his view that such a swoop would represent a backward step for the club.
"I'm not sure Fabregas would be the right player for Arsenal," Robson said.
"He was brilliant for Arsenal but the last year or so he started to - [be] a bit like [Thierry] Henry... Do what he wanted to do rather than being a team player.
"I think it would be a backward step to bring him back in. I think he would probably be better off going to Liverpool or Manchester United."
It seems unlikely that the majority of Arsenal supporters will share this view, such is the level of affection for the player still felt in North London and the fact that he would appear to represent an upgrade on many of Arsene Wenger's current midfield personnel.
While it is certainly true that Fabregas is not been quite as influential a figure at Barcelona as he may have liked, he nevertheless remains one of European football's most-accomplished central midfielders and has had to compete with a number of truly world-class talents for a starting berth at the Camp Nou.
The 27-year-old would certainly represent a hugely promising signing for Manchester United this summer, with new manager Louis van Gaal expected to look to significantly improve the midfield options at Old Trafford.
