Manchester United need not worry about losing out to another club in the race to sign Luke Shaw this summer, as they are the only club who have shown any interest in signing him.
The Old Trafford club were reportedly going to have to fight off Chelsea for the 18-year-old's signature once the transfer window opened, but this is not the case. According to ESPN, a source close to Southampton dismissed reports that Jose Mourinho wanted the youngster at Stamford Bridge and that the Red Devils who were the only club to have shown any interest so far.
Manchester United have a summer of rebuilding to do ahead of Louis van Gaal taking over in July, as they look to improve the squad ahead of a crucial Premier League campaign. Van Gaal is currently in charge of the Holland national team and will take up the hot seat at Old Trafford once the Oranje interest in Brazil is complete and has been tasked with getting the club back into the Champions League.
They could only finish seventh last year after a calamitous campaign under David Moyes, which saw him sacked less than a year after taking charge, and Van Gaal is reportedly eyeing up a number of summer additions. The report claims a bid of £27million was made by Manchester United some time ago and is still on the table being considered by Southampton.
Shaw will be seen as the long-term successor to current first choice left-back Patrice Evra, who ended speculation surrounding his own future last month by signing a one-year extension to his current contract, which expired this summer. However, the England international is unlikely to take kindly to being second fiddle to anyone after two fantastic seasons as a regular for Southampton since their return to the Premier League.
