Last season Luis Suarez was the subject of such transfers speculation as it appeared his love affair with Liverpool would end and he would start a new relationship with Real Madrid.
Suarez’s head would have rightly ruled that a move to Real Madrid would enhance his chances of tasting the tangible success of winning trophies. Yet his heart persuaded him to take a leap of faith with Liverpool. Initially, it was probably more in hope than expectation that Suarez thought the Anfield club could mount a challenge to the Premier League’s elite and by extension secure the Champions League football he lusts after.
His gamble has been rewarded handsomely though, as he enjoyed the best personal season of his career, sweeping all before him at the Player of the Year award ceremonies after scoring an amazing 29 times in 27 Premier League matches. More importantly, the collective success of Liverpool, who secured a second place finish behind Manchester City in the Premier League, means the club can now offer Suarez Champions League football- a stage he craves and one his talent deserves.
However, the Liverpool stars lawyer, Alejandro Balbi, recently hinted that Suarez could still be seduced by Real Madrid in the close season. Balbi stated to the Daily Mail, "When there is an offer from a big club like Real Madrid it is difficult to say no. They are one of the most important teams in the world."
Of course not many could condemn Suarez if the allure of becoming Madrid’s next Galatico proves irresistible. After all, there are not many more historic or better places to play your football than the Bernabeu. But the Anfield talisman is already at a great club, with an equally as illustrious history.
The club is reveling under the revolution of Brendan Rodgers and Suarez is the key man to Liverpool’s renaissance. After sinking in a sea of mediocrity the last few seasons, Liverpool now have the tide behind them and look to be sailing into another successful period in the clubs history.
Suarez is idolised by everyone at Liverpool, and that strength of feeling is reciprocated by the Uruguayan who clearly loves the club. This deep emotional tie that has developed between Suarez and Liverpool should convince him to resist the allure of Real Madrid for one more season at least.
Sure Suarez would have a far greater chance of tasting Champions League glory with the aristocrats of Real. But they are are expected to contest the major titles on a routine basic. Would the warrior in him not derive more satisfaction in achieving the improbable dream with a club like Liverpool that is daring to be great again?
For a kid from the mean streets of Montevideo, would the challenge of firing Liverpool back to the summit of football again, against all the odds, not appeal more to his fiercely competitive nature than simply satisfying the basic expectations of the Bernabeu fans?
Just because the sun shines brighter in Spain, doesn’t mean the grass will be greener at Real Madrid.
As a football romanticist, that has been touched by the bond between Suarez and Liverpool, I for one hope that love continues to blossom between the two.
