Atletico Madrid are considering a move for Carlos Vela, despite recent reports the Real Sociedad striker is set for a surprise return to Arsenal.
According to talkSPORT, Los Rojiblancos boss Diego Simeone has identified the Mexico international as a player to strengthen his attacking options at the Vicente Calderon Stadium next season.
Vela hit 16 La Liga goals for Real Sociedad last term and was one of Jagoba Arrasate's star performers throughout 2013/14.
His fine form prompted admiring glances from Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who was said to be considering activating the buyback clause that was written into the deal that took the 25-year-old from the Emirates to the Anoeta Stadium in 2012.
However, last week Arsenal's prospective transfer plans were shrouded in doubt after Vela revealed he never felt comfortable in London, adding that his style of football was better suited to La Liga than the Premier League.
And, with David Villa looking set to leave Atletico Madrid for a new challenge in the MLS with New York City FC, the former Gunner could prove to be a quality replacement for the former Barcelona man.
Diego Costa's future in Simeone's side is by no means certain either, meaning regular first-team football might not be an unrealistic prospect with the Spanish champions next season.
