If Carl Froch v George Groves II proved anything over the weekend - aside from the fact that Froch is ultimately the better of the two - it’s that there isn’t a boxing fan alive who doesn’t love a good grudge match.

Whether it’s hype fuelled between two fighters who have a history of bad blood, or the expectation surrounding two who have never crossed paths, no amount of money and showboating can do as much as a good old fashioned rivalry when it comes to selling a bout. The fact that 80,000 people turned up at Wembley this weekend bears testament to that.

Froch and Groves may both be capable boxers, but it was their mouths and bitter animosity which captured the attentions of the public.

With that sensational fight fresh in our minds, combined with the imminent release of the anticipated comedy blockbuster Grudge Match, starring Sylvester Stallone and Robert de Niro as two boxers who take to the ring for one last brawl in a bid to determine once and for all who is the better fighter, we thought it high time we picked through some of the greatest boxing rivalries of all time.

We’ve limited ourselves to a tasty five, but we’d love to hear some of yours… Comment in the box below with your favourite boxing rivalries.
