Ashley Cole has taken himself on holiday in a bid to forget he has been given the boot from the England squad and recover from an injury-hit club campaign, according to the Daily Mail.

The 33-year-old was seen dining out with friends not long after England boss Roy Hodgson made the decision not to take him to Brazil as part his 23-man squad, with Southampton youngster Luke Shaw preferred as cover at left-back.

Whilst the defender settled down to dinner his ex-teammates were playing a friendly match against Ecuador, which saw Shaw start at international level for the first time.

Cole has recently declared himself as a free agent, with Chelsea yet to offer the veteran a suitable contract as the 33-year-old weighs up his options.

When the news broke that Cole would not be joining the squad fans were left slightly surprised, but the fact he's currently a free agent without a club given his considerable experience is even more of a shock.

However, it is an understandable decision by the manager after Cole has been out of action following a knee injury, which coupled with the form of Cesar Azpiliceuta restricted him to just 17 Premier League appearances.
