One week on from the brilliant NXT: Takeover event, Adrian Neville was in action again as he took on Justin Gabriel, whilst Summer Rae also made her return to NXT on the June 5 edition of NXT.
Before the main show starts we are shown quick highlights of the events that occurred on NXT: Takeover where Charlotte defeated Natalya to become the new NXT Women’s Champion as well as Ric Flair and Bret Hart’s reactions. The tensions between Natalya and Tyson Kidd on the post-show are shown as well as a reminder that Tyler Breeze is the new number one contender to the NXT Championship.
Match One – Mojo Rawley vs. Aiden English
The usual antics took place with Rawley’s ‘stay hyped’ video package and Aiden English singing on his way down to his match. The match itself was average at best, but then again it is developmental and a place to hone your skills so it is understandable and Mojo Rawley does need some more work. He hit the Hyper Drive for the victory over English for the victory.
Result – Mojo Rawley defeats Aiden English
Match Two – Charlotte vs. Bailey
Charlotte’s first match since capturing the NXT Women’s Championship but the fans were still firmly behind fan favourite Bailey. A solid diva’s match which has been the case for a number of weeks now so the future of the divas division in the WWE does look bright. The big talking point here was Summer Rae, who returned to NXT and almost cost her partner the victory, Charlotte avoided the surprise pin but hit her finisher with the win.
Result – Charlotte defeats Bailey
After the match there is some tension between Charlotte, Summer Rae and Sasha Banks – the trio known as the ‘BFFs’. However all that tension was out of the window once they started to attack Bailey, but Paige and Emma made the save as the ‘BFFs’ retreat.
Match Three – Jason Jordan and Tye Dillinger vs. Steward Cumberland and Phillip Ghouljar
This was a lengthy tag team match when you consider the second team are an enhancement team. I believe it shouldn’t have gone on for that length as it didn’t make Dillinger and Jordan look dominant enough. Nevertheless they did pick up the victory and they look like a very good team in the ring, technical and strong; expect them to challenge The Ascension for the Tag Team Championships very soon.
Result - Jason Jordan and Tye Dillinger defeat Steward Cumberland and Phillip Ghouljar
Tyler Breeze makes his way out next and he talks about defeating Sami Zayn the previous week at NXT: Takeover whilst making sure he stares into his phone’s camera several times. He doesn’t take too kindle to the ‘Ole!’ chants which breaks out in support of Sami Zayn; who isn’t even on the card tonight.
He then tells us all that it’s time for the world premiere of his official music video. We then sit through three minutes of Tyler Breeze singing through a microphone with some flashy lights in the video. The camera finally cuts back into the ring and he is in tears; proud of his work whilst the fans actually chant ‘this is awesome’.
A ‘goodbye Bo’ video package airs, as we are all very sad to see Bo Dallas leave NXT.
Main Event – Adrian Neville vs. Justin Gabriel
This match isn’t for the NXT Championship but the commentary team of William Regal, Tom Phillips and Byron Saxton do emphasise the fact that Justin Gabriel is a big challenge as he too is similar to Neville and even Tyson Kidd.
A solid main event match to say the least, great crowd reaction for their champion and he didn’t disappoint either. A lot high-flying moves and holds; just moments for the fans to cheer for but they were all pulled off very well. It’s a shame Justin Gabriel cannot talk because he certainly can put on a good match. The finish came when Justin Gabriel was close to hitting the 450 splash, only for Adrian Neville to move out of the way, hitting a few kicks on Gabriel and hitting a running dropkick. He then successfully hit the Red Arrow for the victory.
Result – Adrian Neville defeats Justin Gabriel
That’s not all for NXT as Tyson Kidd makes his way to the ring after the match and tells Neville that he is embarrassed by his actions after his loss to Neville at Takeover. He goes on to admit that Neville was the better man and goes on to ask for a rematch for the NXT Championship. He asks Neville if he wants to do it one more time and Neville agrees to it; they shake hands as NXT goes off the air.
A decent night of wrestling, the noticeable absentee was Sami Zayn so it remains to be seen what the plan is for him in the near future; as a championship match looks unlikely.
