Fixtures

14 June v Colombia (Belo Horizonte)

19 June v Japan (Natal)

24 June v Ivory Coast (Fortaleza)

Strengths

A team that can always cause a surprise, they are not to be underestimated. Borussia Dortmund’s Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Roma’s Vasilis Torosidis provide a commanding centre-back pairing.

The Greeks will aim to press to win the ball back and cover players when they are beaten. Georgios Samaras is more useful for his link-up play than his goalscoring ability, with only eight goals in 71 appearances.

Weaknesses

There is no real source of creativity from midfield. Giorgos Karagounis can still thread a good ball but, at 37-years-old, may lack the stamina to last. Greece will aim to contain their opposition, if they concede first there is no back-up plan.

Key Player

Despite having endured a faltering start to his Premier League career, Kostas Mitroglou is the Greeks’ biggest goal threat. His hold-up play and creativity in the box will be key.

Prediction

With a tough opening fixture against Colombia, they would require two great performances against Ivory Coast and Japan to progress. The Greeks will not go down without a fight but might struggle to make the last 16.

Odds

300/1
