Manchester United target Toni Kroos, whom the club have been chasing for over a year, has rejected a move to Old Trafford and is desperate to move to Real Madrid this summer, according to reports in Spain.

The Daily Express, citing information from Spanish publication El Confidencial, claims that the German international has pleaded with Bayern Munich chiefs to negotiate a move to Madrid, despite the fact that he has publicly rejected a move to Old Trafford. Only last month did the 24-year-old playmaker state that he believed he would be remaining with Bayern until his contract expires in 2015, but it would now seem that he has made a U-turn.

Kroos is said to be asking the powers that be at the Allianz Arena to listen to offers for his signature, as Madrid consider whether or not to spend cash on him as Carlo Ancelotti moves to improve his Champions League winning squad. It could yet be an interesting summer of transfers at the Santiago Bernabeu, despite the fact that they clinched their fabled La Decima last term, as Florentino Perez is predictably determined to secure another blockbuster transfer.

Indeed, a central midfielder does seem to be high on Ancelotti’s list of priorities for the looming window, as they’ve been linked with a number of top European playmakers. However, whilst they’ve registered a strong interest in Paul Pogba it looks for now as though the Frenchman will remain in Turin for at least another year. And, with a deal for Luis Suarez looking unlikely due to Liverpool’s insistence on keeping him, Kroos could well find himself the order of the day.

The midfielder’s stock has certainly risen over the last two seasons thanks to his performances for a domestically all-conquering Bayern side, and whilst he may not have managed to become the apple of Pep Guardiola’s eye he would certainly be a welcome addition to most line-ups in Europe.

This could be particularly relevant given the advancing years of Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard has been used as the primary link up between the defence and attack for Madrid since his move from Liverpool in 2009, and Kroos has showcased that he is capable of thriving in a similar role.

Though it may anger Louis van Gaal and United, it would seem that the door is now open for the Germany international to make his dream move. Chelsea were at one stage tipped to also be in the hunt for his signature, but their interest has cooled with the supposed clinching of Barcelona midfielder Francesc Fabregas.
