The planet’s best footballers will be on show at this summer’s World Cup finals, which finally get underway on Thursday. But ever wondered which nations boast the most expensive squads?

If you have then you’ve come to the right place. Thanks to the Metro, who have produced a neat graphic showing the total costs of all 32 competing nations, we’ve been able to produce a feature of the top ten teams - all laid out in one neat, multi-slide article.

The information is based on the last transfers of the 736 players travelling to Brazil - not the national team’s estimated values. So, in this instance, Lionel Messi would effectively be worth nothing because Barcelona signed him for free from his native Argentina when he was a boy.

It’s a fascinating list - and one which we think contains a few surprises.

Please comment in the section below and share with your friends. This is some terrific additional information to wow your mates with ahead of what promises to be the greatest World Cup finals in history.
