The world finally gets to see the golden generation of Belgium in Brazil this year. They are a golden generation indeed, but are they good enough to win the World Cup? Will they make a mark this year?
This is going to be Belgium's first major tournament since 2002 and I think the wait is going to be worth it for their fans. Most people consider them outsiders to win the World Cup and don't expect them to reach any further than the quarter finals. They are probably right. Though golden, this is an inexperienced squad.
Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, Kevin Mirallas, Romelu Lukaku, Dries Mertens, Adnan Januzaj and their other attacking options are equal to, if not better, than any other country has. They will definitely be an exciting team to watch but each of their attacking options are inexperienced. The onus will be on them to score the goals for their country. They have shown in their respective clubs that they are ready for it. Now is the time do the same for their country.
Their defense may not be as abundant as their attack but it is definitely not short on quality. In Thibaut Courtois, they have a world class goalkeeper. Their back four - Toby Alderweireld, Vincent Kompany, Thomas Vermaelen and Jan Vertonghen will be tough to beat for any team. They have a lot of options in midfield also. Axel Witsel, Moussa Dembele and Marouane Fellaini will be the top candidates to start in midfield. However, as is the case with their attack, all of their options in defense and midfield lack experience.
In my opinion, they are going to be a breath of fresh air. I look forward to see them perform on the big stage. The group stage is going to be a cakewalk for them. The further stages will be the real test for them. They, definitely are a top eight side for me. Are they good enough to beat the likes of Spain, Brazil and Germany remains to be seen. I, for one hope they pull off some big upsets and win the World Cup.
