Barcelona’s top summer target, Ivan Rakitic is on the verge of signing a deal with the former worth £16.2 million, reports the Independent. Both parties will attempt to close the deal before the World Cup where the star midfielder will feature as his country’s shining star.
Rakitic was a crucial and indelible part of Sevilla’s Europa League winning squad last season, scoring 13 goals and making 12 assists from 41 games; a winning record which attracted interest from big clubs like Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid in addition to Barcelona. With the departure of marquee midfielder Cesc Fabregas imminent, the Blaugrana have recently upped the ante in the race to sign Rakitic and now, seem to have emerged victorious.
Earlier, Sevilla FC stated that Rakitic could only leave for a sum close to £30 million, however that dictum seems to have been rendered naught.
Coach Unai Emery told Canal Plus, "I could understand if Rakitic leaves. In an ideal world, he would stay but I know he has several offers. If he leaves, we'll try and sign another Rakitic."
His comments add truth to the rumours.
Born in Switzerland, Rakitic will feature for Croatia in the World Cup this month. Bearing the high hopes of his countrymen, the dexterous footballer will be a man to watch out for. Should his move to Spain be confirmed, he would no doubt fit in amongst the legends that have graced Camp Nou.
