One of England’s leading cricketers, Ian Bell, has thrown his support behind Wayne Rooney and the England football team ahead of the World Cup in Brazil beginning on Thursday.

Speaking exclusively to GiveMeSport from a sun kissed Lord's ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka, Aston Villa and England supporter Bell believes Roy Hodgson’s team has the perfect blend of youth and experience to do well in the football showpiece.

Bell also joined the chorus of big names like Pele and Mourinho who believe that Rooney should lead the England attack and could be one of the stars of the tournament.

Bell is no stranger to major tournaments after playing for his country in two cricket World Cups and six Ashes series over a 10-year international career, and the 2013-2014 England cricketer of the year told GiveMeSport: “A football World Cup in Brazil is incredible, its like a cricket World Cup in the Caribbean, absolutely brilliant to go and watch. The atmosphere is going to be great!”

Bell went on to acknowledge that England are in a tough group however from what he has seen in the media, suggests England could do well.

“They have some very talented players and I hear in the media they are all doing well, enjoying it, and having some fun which is great. It is what you want to see ahead of big pressure games, they need to go out and enjoy it as well.”

Much like the England cricket side, Roy Hodgson’s team have a good blend of youth and experience, something Bell believes is very exciting for the team.

He said: "You have to have a blend of both youth and experience. Many teams won't want to face England as they will be wary of what they have.”

The elegant and technically gifted batsman is set to join the illustrious 100 Test club for England during the second Test against Sri Lanka at Headingley and he was eager to share his experience of playing for your country with some of the younger England squad.

”It is the best feeling you can have," continued Bell. "Imagine a World Cup in Brazil, it would be one of the best World Cups you could be involved in for your country.”

When asked about whether he thought Rooney was the right option upfront for England, Bell responded by providing his full support to England’s leading player.

“He is the best player England has got," said Bell. "He is a class player and you want class players on the field for the big pressure games don’t you? I am sure this is his time.”
