Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has made £28 million rated Kevin Strootman his No.1 transfer target, according to The Daily Star.
The report has suggested that the Red Devils boss wants to build his side around the Roma midfielder for the 2014/15 season, despite the player currently on the sidelines with a long term injury.
Van Gaal was seemingly ready to hand the midfield ace a key role at this summer's World Cup, however his knee injury has ruled him out of the tournament that begins later today.
The Manchester United boss will be hoping, however, that he can work with the star on a long term period at Old Trafford over the coming years.
It has been well documented that Manchester United have struggled in the middle of the park in recent time, with the likes of Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley and Marouane Fellaini all having failed to impress over the last year.
Manchester United's nightmare season under David Moyes cannot be repeated this time around, and Van Gaal will be desperate to improve in the crucial areas ahead of the up coming campaign.
In truth, the Red Devils are in need of defensive reinforcements, with the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic leaving Old Trafford behind. However, a key area that must be addressed is in the middle of the park.
So, who better than the man Van Gaal seemingly trusts the most? The new Manchester United boss has seen first hand the class and quality that Strootman can bring to a team, so he seems the right man to arrive at United this summer.
Of course, there will be worries over his fitness, however at just 24-years-old, Strootman has plenty of time on his side and could become a major hit at The Theatre of Dreams.
£28m, however, is a lot of money for an unproven Premier League player, but Strootman appears to be worth the money. And if Van Gaal does build his team around the player, then United could finally have a player ready to take the game to opponents in the centre of midfield.
