If Manchester United follow up on their interest in the exciting young star Daryl Janmaat they could be getting a player in the mould of Dani Alves, according to a Holland legend.
Speaking to Talk Sport, Ronald de Boer talked up the attributes of a player they claim to be a target of Manchester United this summer, as well as being tracked by Tottenham. De Boer claimed Janmaat had all the attributes required to be a huge success at a place like Old Trafford, likening him to the Barcelona and Brazil star.
"For me, Janmaat is a great attacking full-back. I see him a little bit like Dani Alves," said De Boer.
"He can go along the side for 90 minutes with ease. He is also good defensively. He is a modern right-full back."
Holland manager Louis van Gaal has taken Janmaat with him in his squad for the World Cup in Brazil and so an interest in taking the Feyenoord right-back to Old Trafford when he takes up the hotseat after the World Cup is understandable. Especially so when one considers the right-back spot has been something of an issue for a while; Rafael, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have all had a go there in recent seasons without being completely convincing.
Rafael showed signs of improvement but injury problems dogged him and his form tailed off, without really recovering his best showings, so a new face to specialise and make the spot their own would be a shrewd move. Janmaat is solidly built, reasonably quick and decent in the air (he also has a penchant for a spectacular goal) and at only 24 years old he would provide something of an investment.
Manchester United may even be able to get him for a bargain price as he is reportedly refusing to sign a new contract at Feyenoord, with his current deal set to expire next summer. The Rotterdam club are unlikely to risk letting him go for free and will be hoping he has a good tournament in Brazil, so as to encourage more bidders to drive up the price.
Players moving from the Eredivisie to the Premier League have not always been successful in making the switch, so there may be some caution on the part of Manchester United. However, if anyone knows whether he has the attributes to succeed in England it will be Van Gaal, so, if the Red Devils do manage to pull off a deal, this could be a contender for signing of the summer.
