Ottawa Senators fans have been dealt quite a blow. General Manager Bryan has confirmed that Senators Captain Jason Spezza has requested a trade and Murray has reluctantly accepted to help him get out of Ottawa.
Spezza had one more year left in his contract with the Senators. Jason Spezza scored 23 goals and accumulated 43 assists last season for the Senators. He’s played a total of 686 career games so far and has accumulated an impressive total of 687 points. It is likely that Jason Spezza will be headed out West next season. The Anaheim Ducks, Nashville Predators and Vancouver Canucks have all shown interest in acquiring the 31 year old forward.
I’m happy that Jason Spezza is being given the opportunity to move on and help another team. But I do feel sorry for the fans. They’ve already had to deal with the exit of the previous captain Daniel Alfredsson. And now they’ve lost another Captain. However, Bryan Murray has vowed that he wants someone who can help the team heading into next season and some future considerations.
Therefore, teams will have to prepare to pay a high price for Spezza. I would love to see Jason Spezza be dealt to the Vancouver Canucks. Unfortunately for that to happen, I believe the team will have to give up Ryan Kesler and a draft pick. That to me would be a bad trade for the Canucks.
Alternatively, I wouldn’t mind seeing him go to the Anaheim Ducks either. He would certainly be an excellent centermen for the Duck’s second line. The Nashville Predators are in desperate need for an offensive spark, and Jason Spezza may provide just that. He would be an excellent fit for this relatively young roster.
He’s got plenty of experience and could prove to be quite a leader for the younger players. Plus, it would cool to see Spezza and Mike Fisher end up playing together again. These three teams would really benefit having Jason Spezza in their rosters.
Of course, he may not end up on any of these teams. With the recent exit of Sharks veteran Joe Thorton, San Jose may try and persuade Spezza to dive into the Shark tank. Either way Spezza adds a lot more excitement to the off season.
I can’t wait to see where he’ll end up. I believe with the exit of Jason Spezza, Senators defencemen Erik Karlsson or Chris Phillips will be considered to take over as Captain of the team. I sure hope the Ottawa Senators receive something of equal value for Jason Spezza as they continue to move forward next season.
