It's a well known fact that former WWE superstar CM Punk's active contract runs out next month but could WWE be set to extend it?
CM Punk hasn't been active on the roster since The Royal Rumble at the end of January and since then every time WWE is in his home town of Chicago or there is a sighting of someone who looks like CM Punk near any venue WWE are a performing at, social media goes wild.
The main favourable option for WWE to extend his contract is that it prevents him from performing elsewhere, the company are able to extend his contract even though he isn't performing because there is a clause in most WWE superstars contracts that automatically allows them to be renewed if they are away from the company for an amount of time due to an injury.
It could be played that CM Punk is suffering from an injury or burn out because he needed some time away to recover. But the downside to this is that WWE will have to continue to pay Punk even though he isn't performing or bringing in any revenue himself, except for merchandise sales.
Given that WWE released nine superstars, a diva and a referee yesterday due to the budget cuts they were forced to make because the WWE Network had been less successful than they first hoped, it is highly unlikely they would risk extending Punk's contract just to stop him from working elsewhere.
Currently the superstar himself is happy away from the sport and was enjoying spending his time doing charity work as well as arranging to marry former Divas Champion AJ Lee, a ceremony that is scheduled to be later this month before Lee makes her return to WWE where she can claim her rematch clause for the title she lost to Paige the night after Wrestlemania back in April.
Whilst Lee still doesn't have an official return date, it seems the divas division is waiting on her return because the match between her and Paige is set to be one of the best in the last few years. CM Punk is not set to return with the woman who will then be his wife, and hasn't even been rumoured to be making a return before his contract ends next month so it would probably simpler for WWE to allow Punk's contract to expire because he doesn't seem to want to return to the company where he found fame.
