World Cups can make or break a player over the course of a few weeks. Sometimes players burst onto the scene and become sought-after targets from the world’s biggest clubs, and sometimes they become the subject of mass criticism for not showing up when it matters most.
But whilst the players who fall into the former category can usually be identified rather early on due to their reputations, the individuals who fail to show up on football’s biggest stage can sometimes take us by surprise. After all, anyone can have a bad tournament.
Of course whilst there are those who can get away with not playing their best football and still being adored by fans worldwide - I’m looking at you Lionel Messi - there are those who simply have to perform; their futures literally depend on it.
Here, GiveMeSport constructs a countdown of the stars who can’t afford to have bad World Cups. There’s some obvious choices, some not so obvious, but all of them have one thing in common - they could be sold, or rather miss out on the chance of a big move, if they fail to impress in the coming weeks.
