Spain 1-5 Netherlands: Player Ratings

World and European champions Spain were torn to shreds by a ruthless Netherlands side, who scored five goals with only one in reply. Xabi Alonso gave Spain the lead from the penally spot, but two goals apiece from Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben, plus another from Stefan de Vrij earned the Oranje a famous World Cup victory.

Wesley Sneijder missed a glorious opportunity to put Netherlands ahead early on after being played through on goal by Arjen Robben. The experienced playmaker had all the time to pick his spot but proceeded to kick the ball straight at Iker Casillas.

Soon after Spain took the lead thanks to Alonso, who was presented with the opportunity to score from the spot after Diego Costa was judged to have been fouled inside the penalty area by De Vrij. Real Madrid midfielder Alonso made no mistake from 12 yards - coolly stroking the ball home to give the world and European champions a 1-0 lead.

David Silva missed an excellent chance to double Spain’s lead following a stunning pass by Andres Iniesta - and it proved costly as, moments later, the Netherlands had equalised thanks to Van Persie’s moment of magic.

Dally Blind’s brilliant pass was met first time by the Manchester United star, whose diving header sailed over the stranded Casillas. It was a moment of pure class from the Oranje’s all-time top goalscorer.

Robben then made it 2-1 to the Netherlands after the break with a cool finish from another excellent pass from the impressive Blind, while De Vri’s header extended Louis van Gaal’s side’s lead to two goals with a header from a Sneijder free-kick.

Van Persie and Robben then scored a goal each again before full-time to heap misery on a shell-shocked Spain.
