Chelsea join race to sign Sami Khedira

Chelsea want to bring Arsenal transfer target Sami Khedira to the club this summer, according to reports.

The Daily Star claims the Blues want to strengthen their midfield further in the transfer window, having already added Spanish star Cesc Fabregas to the squad.

However, they look set to face a challenge from the Gunners, who were linked with a £16million bid for the player earlier in the week.

Chelsea already have several options at the heart of their side, with Fabregas joining the likes of Ramires, Oscar and Nemanja Matic just some of the players available to manager Jose Mourinho.

Khedira would add even more quality to the Blues’ all-star roster if ‘the special one’ can lure the 27-year-old to Stamford Bridge, having worked with him previously in Spain.

Mourinho was at the Real Madrid helm when Khedira joined the club, and whilst the German international isn’t a typical Los Blancos player, he has featured fairly regularly at the Santiago Bernabeu ever since.

The report claims Chelsea want to pair Khedira with Matic in the defensive midfield positions, but it remains to be seen if they can lure him to west London with Roman Abramovich’s riches.

Arsenal transfer challenge

Arsenal, meanwhile, have money to spend this summer, and need to strengthen their squad to launch a sustained Premier League challenge next season.

Despite missing part of last season with a knee injury, Khedira still has plenty of years ahead of him and the ability to become a key part of Arsene Wenger’s side at the Emirates Stadium for the Gunners.

With a handful of players thought to be on Carlo Ancelott’s radar in Spain, the former Stuttgart starlet may find himself surplus to requirements in the capital, and that could well leave the door open for Arsenal.

They now face a challenge from capital rivals Chelsea though, and that can only benefit the player’s current club and potentially push the price tag up.
