World No. 1 Rafael Nadal has spoken out about Andy Murray’s decision to appoint Amelie Mauresmo as his new coach.

The Scot has received a mixed reception since the announcement of this news, especially from current tennis player Marinko Matosevic, who explained how he could never do such a thing, as he doesn’t think highly of the women’s game.

However, Grand Slam champion Nadal couldn’t disagree with the Australian more when he said: “Andy is a great guy and if he chose Amelie for now, its because he thinks she’s the person he really needs.”

“It’s true that its something new to contract a woman for the men’s [game] but in the end Amelie has great experience in the world of tennis, she’s a great champion so I don’t see a problem, I think he’ll be fine.”

Unfortunately, the two haven’t got off to a flying start since his early exit from Queen’s yesterday seeing him unable to defend his title.

However, Murray has stressed that he will now enjoy some well-earned relaxation time ahead of the Wimbledon Championships, which are set to kick off 23rd June.

This will be the biggest test for the new partnership in a bid to see whether Murray can defend his first ever Wimbledon title – seeing him the first man to do so since Fred Perry 77 years ago.
