Nacho Monreal wanted by Athletic Bilbao this summer

Arsene Wenger could lose another of his Arsenal defenders this summer after it emerged that Athletic Bilbao want to sign Spanish left-back Nacho Monreal.

The Daily Express reports how the 28-year-old is wanted by Ernesto Valverde in San Mames, but only if they can negotiate a cut-price deal for the player.

Monreal arrived at the Emirates Stadium in January 2013 in a reported £8 million deal, but has struggled to justify that fee after failing to cement his place in the Gunners first-team, with Kieran Gibbs remaining Wenger's first choice full-back on the left side of defence.

Despite his lack of regular action Arsenal are keen to keep the former Malaga star in north London, as they look to avoid a mass exodus of defensive stars before the start of the 2014/15 campaign.

Bacary Sagna has already departed following the expiry of his contract earlier this month, and instead opted to pen a deal with Premier League rivals Manchester City.

Meanwhile, club captain Thomas Vermaelen has also been linked with a move away from Arsenal this summer, with Manchester United reported as unlikely admirers of the Belgian centre-back.

Arsenal have previously been credited with an interest in Athletic Bilbao stopper Aymeric Laporte - possibly as a replacement for Vermaelen - and that could prove decisive in the La Liga outfit's alleged pursuit of Monreal. A player-plus cash deal could be in the offing.
