When Carlos Vela inevitably departed the Emirates permanently back in 2011, everybody thought that the Premier League and most certainly Arsenal wouldn't be seeing him again anytime soon.
After failing to impress in six years, including four experimental loan spells, Arsene Wenger finally decide to give up hope on what was considered a very exciting young talent. Three years later, it appears the tides have turned as Vela is being heavily linked with a return to North London.
The Mexican, who currently plays for Spanish outfit Real Sociedad, is heavily linked to be re-united with Arsenal as Wenger searches for another striker to compete with Oliver Giroud. However is bringing Vela back the answer?
During his time at Arsenal he never exactly lit up the Premier League but some would argue he wasn't given enough chances as his playing time was built up of League Cup and FA Cup games, most of which were substitute appearances.
This may be so but overall, the 25-year-old made 29 first team appearances for the Gunners scoring only three goals. There was much talk of Vela's potential but he never truly showed the quality his initial transfer was based upon, only small glimpses.
After four loan spells and much opportunity to impress, Wenger and Arsenal decided to let him go to Real Sociedad where he has certainly performed well, scoring 30 goals in two seasons. It is for this reason that has captured the North Londoners attention as they are now strong contenders to re-sign their former striker.
If this were to happen it would most certainly be the wrong move for Arsenal, and quite frankly an act of desperation. The main transfer target for Arsene Wenger this summer is to buy a top class striker; one that will not only challenge Giroud but be capable of winning them the Premier League. Unfortunately Carlos Vela is not that man.
He is an easy and cheap buy for Arsenal, should they opt to sign him but will only play as a bit-part player, much like he did during his previous time at the Emirates. There is no doubt Vela has adapted to La Liga very well but he struggled in the Premier League and if he were to return, would only act as cover rather than competition.
What Arsenal fans want to see now is for their club to once again spend their money and buy a forward that will drive them towards more trophies. Proven quality like Loic Remy and Karim Benzema - who Arsenal have also been linked with - will add extreme threat to the Gunners attack and see them mount a serious challenge but they will need to do everything they can to entice them players to the club.
