Atletico Madrid have moved into pole position in the race to secure the services of Barcelona's Cristian Tello after Diego Simeone expressed an interest in the young Barcelona and Spanish international, as reported by the Daily Star.
Tello is yet another player to find himself surplus to requirements at the Camp Nou following the arrival of new manager Luis Enrique, and the impending departure of the 22-year old has sparked interest from Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton and a host of Spanish clubs, most notably La Liga champions, Atletico Madrid.
Former Barcelona playmaker and now coach, Enrique, is having a clear-out at the Catalan giants with Tello almost certain to join Cesc Fabregas, Alexi Sanchez, Carles Puyol, Victor Valdes, Dani Alves, Javier Mascherano and Xavi out of the exit door.
Arsenal were linked to the versatile front man in January and Tello could be the perfect foil for Giroud if Wenger makes his move.
Liverpool and Everton have also expressed an interest however one expects Everton have no chance, while Liverpool will be a consideration for the young Spaniard, especially if Brendan Rodgers can do the unthinkable and hold on to Luis Suarez.
If Rodgers looses Suarez, he will need resources upfront and with Alexi Sanchez more than likely heading to Juventus, Tello could be his man.
However, Atletico Madrid have in the last 24-hours emerged as favourites to sign the youngster in a deal that probably makes more sense.
Atletico coach, Diego Simeone, will very shortly have a big cheque in his hand from the sale of Diego Costa, and with the exit of David Villa across the Atlantic to New York City FC, the La Liga champions will desperately need to strengthen their attacking resources ahead of the new season.
Tello endured a frustrating season last year at Barcelona after featuring in only 22-matches and starting only two of them.
At 22-years of age he will not want to be warming the bench for much longer and Atletico could very well be the right move for the Spaniard.
Valencia and Porto are also monitoring the situation.
